The beloved Haynes became North’s principal in 2001 and energetically served the school in an official capacity until his retirement in 2020. Before that, he was the school’s assistant principal and athletic director. He served Omaha Public Schools for more than half a century. He began teaching social studies at Omaha Tech in 1967. There, he became the first Black head basketball coach in OPS in 1971. After Tech closed, he became assistant principal and athletic director at McMillan Junior High. He arrived at North in 1987, building relationships and delivering strong leadership while telling countless brothers and sisters in the halls to “Hit the bricks!!”
