Neal Hefti

class of 1941

First known as a jazz trumpeter, Neal was known and admired as an arranger, conductor, producer, and Grammy winner. He worked with Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, Mel Torme, and Tony Bennett. He toured with Harry James, arranged for Buddy Rich, and wrote songs for the Basie band such as “Splanky,” “Little Pony,” and “Lil’ Darlin.’” Neal wrote TV and film scores for The Odd Couple, Barefoot in the Park, Last of the Red Hot Lovers, Duel at Diablo, A New Leaf, Sex and the Single Girl, and many more. "Batman Theme," the title song of the 1966 Batman TV series, was Neal’s most famous tune, for which he won his Grammy. Hefti died in 2008 at age 85.
